A One Sided Mattress Nightmare!

I visited the Great Wolf Lodge this weekend with my family and had a blast! This place is amazing! Indoor Waterslides, and a truly magnificent place to stay. Highly recommended to all!

I would give this place a 5 Star rating if it wasn’t for the horrible Mattresses. I always check out the mattresses wherever I stay to see what I’m sleeping on. My wife laughs at me 🙂 Anyhow, when we first got to the room I laid on the mattress, to rest from the long drive. I was greeted by a huge soft spot in the middle portion of my body. So I tried the other mattress to pick the spot I was going to sleep that night:) Same thing. It felt like I was lying in a hammock. I immediately ripped of the bedding to see what type of mattress was causing this. Simmons Beautyrest. Looking at the law tag, I saw how old this mattress was. I was surprised, but not shocked, that this mattress was manufactured in 2006. 3 YEARS OLD!.

Now granted several people had slept on this mattress of different body builds and sizes, but no mattress should break down in 3 YEARS, right? WRONG! Like, we have said all along. if your want your mattress to last beyond 5-7 years, you should buy a 2 Sided Mattress.

We slept horribly! But sleeping on a one sided mattress, when it was all said and done, was made tolerable by the time spent at The Great Wolf Lodge.

There were many two sided mattresses that didn’t last more than three years. Many hospitality institutions skimp on the quality of their beds. This means that they aren’t buying mattresses to last. In many cases they can write off the bed in three years and then replace it. A hotel or motel with above 70% occupancy is in heaven therefore they can normally provide comfort a low cost by just replacing mattresses often. In this years economy that cycle may be broken because in general occpancy is down and the money to replace the beds just isn’t there.
One sided beds are here to stay because of the federal fire laws one thing you can do however is rotate the mattress 180 degrees every three months to give it more life. Most of your weight is between your hips and that would be on a different spot by rotating.

The federal fire standards should not be an excuse for making one sided mattresses as adding fire barrier to the second side is a fairly simple and relatively inexpensive solution.

As for hospitality institutions replacing mattresses every three years, why would they want to spend that kind of money; write off or no, when a two sided mattress can provide comfort and use 2 to 3 times longer, it doesn’t make sense to add that unnecessary expense. Also, major companies like Englander, Therapedic, Serta and others continue to make two-sided mattresses for their hotel/motel lines.
