But what does a good cheap mattress look like, and how can you find it?

The best cheap mattress for you will be driven by how long you need the mattress to last. If you’re looking for something that will be comfortable enough for just a few months, this article is not for you. Any mattress can feel okay for a little while. If you’re someone who wants to get a few years, or even a decade of comfort, out of a cheap mattress, the following information will be helpful.

Start with coils.

If you want something good but on the cheaper end, buy a mattress with coils. Certainly not all coil mattresses are inexpensive; some are quite luxurious and can be priced extraordinarily high. But in the world of cheap mattresses, coils are the champions.

This is because low-cost foam mattresses wear out quickly. It doesn’t matter what kind of warranty they stamp on an inexpensive all-foam mattress, it won’t last very long. It might feel great on day one, but comfort will diminish the longer you have it, as foams break down quickly. This is why a heat-tempered coil system is the best value in low cost mattresses. These coils take years to lose their shape. Since flat mattresses are more comfortable, and coils stay flat longer, this is an easy choice.

Coils are not comfortable by themselves, so there has to be something on top to make them comfy. However, you don’t want too much padding, and you’ll want the padding on both sides. If you don’t get a two-sided mattress, you can’t do anything to minimize sagging. It’s a simple concept: flipping a mattress works to keep it flat.

Mattress depth (AKA height) does not add value.

The thicker the mattress, the faster it’ll sag. If you need a really soft cheap mattress, buy a cheap but good mattress topper to put on it. If the topper is a separate piece, it can be replaced once it’s worn out. That way, you won’t have to go to the expense of replacing the entire mattress again. However, if all the soft material is built in to the mattress’s comfort layers, it’s difficult to keep all those cushy layers flat.
