Wallingford Parade Celebrates Our Community

Under the warm, sunny skies of July each year, 45th Street comes alive as the long-standing Wallingford Parade marches through, uniting the community in a lively celebration of local spirit and creativity.

Three generations of the Garfield family played significant roles in 2024’s Wallingford Parade on Saturday July 13th. Jeff and Wanda Garfield led the procession as Grand Marshals, while Krystal and Brett Garfield commanded the Bedrooms & More float, which impressively took home the 2nd prize for best float. Eric Garfield added a touch of fun by walking the parade in his custom-made Mattress Man costume.

Blake Garfield meanwhile was instrumental in the organization and planning, and led the parade as the President of the non-profit Celebrate Wallingford with support from previous Wallingford Chamber of Commerce participants Kathy Baron, Stephen Finkenscher, and a committed team of volunteers.

The Wallingford parade began in 1949, previously known as the Wallingford Kiddie Parade and remains part of the larger Seafair festivities each summer.

The parade has encountered obstacles, such as cancellations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, the community’s dedication and enthusiasm have brought it back, showcasing Wallingford’s resilience and enduring spirit.

The parade features a different theme each year, encouraging participants to get creative with their costumes and floats. Past themes have included “Be French for a Day,” “Route 66,” and “Dog Days of Summer.”

Last year’s theme was ‘Be a Hero,’ encouraging residents, merchants, and visitors to embrace their inner heroes and showcase them at the parade. Many people attended and performed, including the Seattle Schools All-City Band, UW Alumni Band, Kennedy Catholic High School Lancer Marching Band, and various Scout Packs.

“The Wallingford Parade is growing, and the increased participation and community involvement were palpable,” said Blake. “Energy levels and enthusiasm were high during the incredible performances by the talented youth and adult organizations.”

For those who missed last year’s parade, do not worry. The Wallingford Parade returns this year on Saturday July 12th at 11am. The Wild in Wallingford theme celebrates 40 years of local artist Ron Petty’s best loved sculpture, Animal Storm.

Everyone is invited to join in celebrating our vibrant community. Stay updated on all the latest news and events by following the Wallingford Parade Facebook page or visiting celebratewallingfordwa.com. We look forward to seeing you this year!
