Englander Latex Mattress Review: A Retailer Speaks

Brasilia Mattress by Englander sold at Bedrooms & More Seattle
Share:Share on FacebookTweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Google+Share on TumblrEmail this to someone

This is an open letter from Jeff Garfield of Bedrooms & More in Seattle about internet discussions regarding problems with some latex mattresses.

My name is Jeff Garfield. My wife Wanda & I own Bedrooms & More, a mattress & bedrooms destination store in Seattle, Washington.

We’ve operated our business in the same location since 1972. We’ve been privileged to serve tens of thousands of customers in the Puget Sound region. We carry the Pacific Northwest’s largest selection of natural, eco-friendly latex foam mattresses. We love latex and think it’s a great choice for most people

It’s difficult to read that customers anywhere have been unhappy with any latex mattress when we believe in them so strongly. While the negative online reviews are NOT from our customers and are NOT about the mattress models we carry, I still feel compelled to respond.

I’m aware that people who love a product rarely write reviews; it’s usually someone who has problems with a product or receives bad service who is most likely to complain. However, we get more referrals to our store by latex mattress owners than any other product we’ve carried in 44 years. This shows us that people really love sleeping on latex.

Curious about latex?

Latex foam rubber is a remarkably consistent & durable mattress material. Explore our selection of the best botanical latex on earth: a product called Botanicore™, which is 100% straight from the rubber tree.

What we know about Englander Sleep Products

Englander has been in business for over 100 years. Like many national companies, Englander licenses use of its name to different manufacturing plants throughout the country. Since the mid-80s when we first began dealing with “Englander,” our local manufacturing plant has been Tualatin Sleep Products in Tualatin, Oregon. The national “Englander” organization has been very weak, with each franchised plant pretty much building whatever mattress styles they wanted, with little consistency nationwide. Our Tualatin Sleep Products plant builds more than 800 different mattress styles with many dozens of those being latex or part latex. The Tualatin-made mattresses we sell at Bedrooms & More are NOT available through any other plant or dealers. How other plants work with dealers or customers is not standardized throughout the country.

At our store, we’ve carried mattresses by Englander, Sealy, Stearns & Foster, Serta, Simmons, Kingsdown, Restonic, King Koil, Springcraft, Springwall, Natura, OMI, Tempurpedic, Select Comfort, Boyd, and Somma. I have yet to find a perfect product. There are pluses and minuses to all. Some of these brands we found to be unacceptable for various reasons and we took them off our sales floor.

Englander, of all the brands mentioned, we’ve found to be the most recommended by our customers. We’ve found the manufacturing company (Tualatin Sleep Products) to be most responsive to warranty and comfort concerns.

However, a quick Google search reveals that not all customers  have such good experiences with either their plants and/or dealer.

Are Englander products perfect?

No, of course not. As I said, we’ve yet to find a perfect product.

How do Englander mattresses compare to other brands we sell? Our experience puts them right at the top of the list for satisfaction and responsiveness. Yep, we’re saying it: we are fans of Englander, and we feel good about selling their mattresses to our customers in Seattle and around the country.

We love latex & we’d like to show you why

When you visit our Seattle store, you can try out our latex mattresses in person, & we can show you samples of latex made through different processes. Get a head start today by exploring our selection.

I bought an Englander Natural Latex mattress in 2005 after spine surgery; it is the only one tolerable. The only drawback is it’s one-sided and started “pitting” early on. I am SO happy to have found your site; you are speaking my language. We went mattress shopping some years ago, and had to return an expensive iComfort due to outgassing along with the extreme pain. I also was told that Englander closed and searched for similar ones when I found your site. I will at look at the tags to find out what model I have. I do want a… Read more »

We just recently purchased an Englander “bridgeport” latex bed from a local outlet in northgate and will it will be delivered on the first. In looking into latex mattresses in hindsight we are now wondering if we got a good deal. Which Englander dealer are you working with that is local to seattle, if it is ok to ask. The thought i was having is to compare their englander manufacturer with yours and if it is then maybe we wont worry so much. This was the most we have spent on a bed and are not in a position to… Read more »

We had an englander latex mattress and foolishly left it for the folks who bought our home. I would like to know if you ship out of Oregon? We are specifically interested in a split King to fit on an adjustable frame. Thank you!

In 1968 I was Sales Rep for Englander Mattress. I purchased a king size Mr & Mrs foam latex Mattress. It was the most comfortable Mattress we have ever owned & slept on because each side was different strengths. We now need a new foam 100 percent foam latex mattress. Can you help us find what we are looking for here in Ok City? Thank you Ross

A true mattress old-timer! You even predate me. I started in 1970. Englander specialized in latex starting in the 30’s
The Englander mattresses of the era you are referencing would have been a 6” core of latex and not much else.
The basic latex is the Winslow and is available in three different firmnesses.

I have been looking sat an Englander latex mattress (king size) firm at a dealer here in Eugene. However, I cannot see how you would flip the mattress since it has a think layer of natural latex over a soy foam. How does this compare to a completely made natural latex? Can anon answer please. My PT suggested that latex would be the best thing for my back. Normally I am a side and stomach sleeper but hope with a base that will raise at head and leg area I can learn to sleep on my back.

my husband and i have been sleeping on the same dunlop rubber englander mattress for 45 years. it has been wonderful until the last year. I was told at all the mattress stores that englander was out of business and no one could order dulop pure latex mattresses. i discovered that they were available for shipment from indonesia..with an iffy return policy. in the mean time knee replacements and shoulder replacements and 3 back surgeries later. we want and need a new latex mattress. i was so happy to be told by michael at atlantic mattress co. that i should… Read more »

I recently purchased a Englander natural latex mattress. I live by Chicago so the Plant is close by but I cant find any reviews from this plant? Wondering if you might know anything or have heard good or bad. The mattress is called The Hickory w/pillow top. Thanks

Each plant makes their own mattresses to their own specifications. I am sorry, but I do not have access to the models produced by the Chicago plant.

I don’t know any details of this particular mattress. What I would suggest you do is confirm the specifications to verify what you have purchased. Make sure that you can flip it (the pillow-top should be on both sides). Verify that it is all latex; the law label will identify the content of the mattress by weight. It should say “all new materials” and “consisting of 100% Latex”. If it says polyurethane or other types of foam, it will not wear as evenly as you would hope. Englander makes hundreds of different mattress models throughout the country, and many of… Read more »

I have seen Englander mattresses on craigslist that are described as “pure latex”. Above you state the company only uses natural latex, so it that just an error from the person posting, or do other plants use the synthetic? Do you know if any of Englanders mattresses contain flame retardant chemicals? Thanks!

Each Englander plant uses its own materials and has its own independent contracts with vendors. This means that you will not find the same quality mattress judging from the Englander brand alone. We happen to have a good working relationship with the nearest Englander plant to us and we make sure that we know the materials that are being put into the mattresses that we display.

So: Englander mattress, bought from Seattle store. Flame retardant chemicals in this mattress? Possible Answers to use: Yes/No/I Don’t Know/I’ll Find Out. Thanks

If you are referring to the mattress that you purchased from us in December of 2007, there were no flame retardant chemicals added to the mattress. The 1633 flame test went in to effect July 1, 2007, which required that all mattresses not go up in flames for 30 minutes after being ignited. We were very cautious when the law went into effect that no added chemicals be added in order to pass the tests. The mattress you purchased in 2007 was by far and away the most popular at the time and used a dacron/rayon fire barrier wrap around… Read more »

We just bought a new Englander Memory Foam Mattress. I haven’t slept more than a couple of hours without waking up in pain since we began sleeping on it. I wake up in the morning with awful pain in almost every part of my body. My arms go numb from pressure cutting off the circulation while I sleep. This bed felt fine when I laid on it at the store before we purchased it, But it feels like I’m sleeping on concrete after just a few hours. I had No pain or problems sleeping before we bought this bed. We… Read more »

We are on the other side of the country and need a mattress desperately. I have severe spinal and hip issues but do not want any off gas problems. Latex din a two sided mattress seems to be the answer. Any suggestions?

I would like a price on a king size two sided 100% natural botanical latex with no synthetics.Mattress only. I think a medium to firm is what I prefer. I live in Salem Oregon and could drive up to Seattle to save on delivery…
Unless delivery to Salem is reasonable. Can you please give me some prices. Only need the mattress Thank you, Lynda Hunt 503-871-2291

Very glad I stumbled onto this forum! I am seriously considering purchasing an Englander Mattress. The one I found is Nature’s Finest Latex “Brampton Plush”
Specs: states its petroleum free, 4″ natural latex, 3″ of 2 lb HR Super Soft Polyfoam. The mattress is not flip-able though. The top is very plush which seems to be very comfortable. My worry with the reviews is that it will start to make an impression after some time because of the plush top. Can you offer any insight?

I just started looking for a new mattress. I found one that is really comfortable and I’ve been debating on whether or not I should spend that much money for it. I believe it is the Englander Latex Synergy mattress. I’m just scared I’m going to spend a bunch of money and then 6 months down the road, I’ll regret it. Can you help me decide? Thanks.

I really would like to purchase a latex mattress. My husband is allergic to latex. Is there adequate covering around the latex or will this be a problem?

Lin, We have sold many latex mattresses to people with latex allergies, or concerns about the risk of a latex allergy. People generally do not have reactions because it is very well insulated with a wool quilt, and a cotton cover. Additionally, when people are allergic to latex, they are commonly sensitive to the chemicals used in creating synthetic latex, and ours don’t use the synthetic rubber. With the natural rubber, some people are sensitive to the proteins in the sap of the rubber tree; but botanical latex foam is washed after it has been vulcanized to reduce the presence… Read more »

H, Just came across your 2009 article on latex/Englander mattresses while researching a few of the beds Costco is offering this week:) From reading the posts & replies, I can see that there is yet another reason we would love living in Seattle! Thanks for such great info. We bought an Englander in 2000 when we decided to give up the waterbed. We live in Sacramento so as I see from the warranty tag, it came out of the Stockton. Although interestingly enough, the customer service address is in Tualatin OR. The model we bought is the Princess Luxury…a king… Read more »

Sandy, Thank you for your inquiry. I’m glad you found our blog to be helpful. We understand entirely the frustration one sided mattresses bring. Many of the national “S” brands (Sealy, Serta, Simmons, Sterns and Foster) are owned by private equity firms and financial groups who are only interested in maximizing the profit margin of each product sold. This has led to a steady decline in the quality and longevity of many mattresses sold. Fortunately Englander still makes quality two-sided mattresses for our store. We also have several local manufactures who produce two sided innerspring and botanical latex mattresses. We… Read more »

Thank you for all the great information you’ve provided about latex mattresses. I have been looking at buying a new bed since ours is causing me pain. I first looked into Tempurpedic because it came so highly recommended by family members. However, I recently discovered I have allergies to formaldehyde and read that it may be used in memory foam production. That led me to looking into latex. Which leads me to my questions. ~If I find a store that sells Englander latex mattresses, even if they are one-sided will they feel much the same as the two-sided ones you… Read more »
