Body Changes Causing Sleep Changes? Add a Mattress Topper!

This is my 45th year in the bedding business and in the last few years I have developed a theory for how to determine what is the best mattress for you.

First, let me say, nobody – no salesperson, no doctor, no chiropractor – can tell you what mattress you are going to want or need. That being said, I think there are two parts of your being; your subconscious part and your conscious part. When picking out that new mattress you want to satisfy both.

Think of your subconscious body as the part that wakes up in the morning and says “I feel great. I had a good night’s sleep.” Think of your conscious body as the part that lies down on the new mattress in that mattress store and says “Ahhhhh! That feel great.”

Now every mattress should feel good right away. You’re in the market for a new mattress because your old one is shot! The challenge when shopping for a new mattress is to get past the conscious part, the “ahhhhh factor” and get through to the subconscious part of your body.

This can take 15 minutes, or even longer, of laying on the bed before that mattress, that felt so good in the first few minutes, may no longer feel so good.

I believe the subconscious you is looking for an alignment that comes from the core of the mattress. That core is usually about 6 inches of the mattress and hasn’t changed much in the last 100 years or so. It can be springs of various types, foams of various types, even air or water. The alignment needs of your body don’t change significantly, even as we age. The conscious body is looking for the cushioning (the ahhhh factor) that we want for our shoulders, hips, knees and even ankles. Once the correct core support (firm, extra firm or plush) for your subconscious body is determined, choosing the comfort layers to satisfy your conscious body is pretty easy.

Bodies change. If you’re 25 you may not know this, but if you are getting a little wisdom in your hair you already do.

What you like today may be different 5 years, or 10 year from now. If you are buying one of these “can’t flip” mattresses that only last 3 to 5 years, it probably doesn’t matter; but if you are buying a mattress, like a solid botanical latex, two-sided mattress that can last 10,15, 20 years or longer, you might consider buying what I call “close to the core”.

That is determining the core support your body needs for alignment and then adding the comfort layers as separate toppers. When your body needs change, you can replace or add to the toppers to suit your needs without losing your investment in the important part of the mattress; the core!

We only sell two sided mattresses. Here's Why:

A 2-sided mattress you can flip and rotate is better for your body and your wallet! Flippable mattresses last up to 3 times as long as ‘can’t flip’ ones. It’s simply untrue that 2-sided mattresses are no longer being made. Here at Bedrooms & More Seattle, they’re all we sell — because it’s what is best for our customers and the environment.

New “Dual System Headboards”

We are in the process of changing many of our headboards to be both “K Series” and “P Series” capable. The headboards will have both sets of holes for using either way. The new headboards will be marked “Dual System Headboard” on the boxes. This process will take time for all sizes and finishes to be available and will be gradual, as the new versions come in and the old version get depleted. We are telling you now so that you can be aware of what the “Dual System Headboard” terminology means when you see it on the box or in our catalog. The list of headboards that will be switched to the new “Dual System” are listed below. Of course, you will need to order the correct rails and footboards depending on whether the customer wants “K” or “P” Series. The new “K Series” height allows for the use of the bigger bunk bed drawers and/or trundle and “K Series” footboards already have the privacy panel built in. We are also making the Folding Footboard Bench Footboard “Dual System”. If you need one of the new items to be “Dual System” (for “K Series”), you will need to specifically request it until all old versions are gone, to make sure you get the new version.
